Morrigan Chapter 1

"Midnight Solace"

Outside the foggy constraints of the hotel window, the city looked like a thousand starlets dancing along the black sky. The head starlet, a giant disk floating above them all, looked down and smiled at the bright work they had left. There were of all shapes and colors, blue, yellow, red...

Morrigan leaned on the wall, looking outside at the work of those starlets, being the only source of light to the room. She, wrapped in black and blue, brushed her soft bangs of hair away from her eyes and rubbed her arm slowly.

She watched the starlets do their work, cloaking the people in a sense of warmth, light and security, seducing them into their houses when they became too afraid to confront the night. They grow comfortable into the light and soon she becomes their lover. Foolish people then develop a monogamous relationship with this light, and soon enough become prisoners to their own souls, not managing to escape. That is when darkness draws them back into it’s womb, giving them a taste to the alternate side of life, before devouring their souls completely, taking away any good the light had brought to them. Yet they don’t resist, because the night has become something exotic to them, and soon the night has found a new companion for a fleeting moment of her lonely existence.

Morrigan concluded she and the darkness had a lot in common, fancying herself as bride of the night.

A gentle tapping appeared from the night, followed by a feminine figure. To the casual observer, it would seem Morrigan was looking into a mirror. But they did not share the same eyes, the young woman looked at Morrigan, half confused and half disapproved. Morrigan traced the figure from the window, and gently pushed the glass aside without a sound.

“Kira” Whispered Morrigan. “I asked you not to come here.”

“Morrigan, why do this? Shouldn’t you return to Makai? With all the rumours of the dark saviour’s return.”

“Stop being so stiff. Tonight is so beautiful, I have to permit myself to frolic in it, and indulge in it.”

Sadness graped her eyes as she saw the shadow of a person coming from the end of the room. “Another victim? How many people have you snatched away...”

“I do no such thing.” Morrigan snapped back. “Is it my fault they think I can bring them eternal pleasure? I’m merely a catalyst to make their dreams come true, even for a while...”

Kira sighed, wondering how she got into this the first place. Surely this wasn’t much better than before. Though she wouldn’t leave. She felt loyalty toward Morrigan, and made sure to be by her side, much to the sucubus’ annoyance. But after being driven to insanity, her only companion was in the desolation of the dark, drowned in it’s sea of false hopes and a placebo of solace. It wasn’t known why, maybe it was because of her potential, or maybe Morrigan actually felt pity for another being, but Kira found herself in the castle of Makai’s dark lands as Morrigan’s right side woman.

Morrigan pushed Kira away, seeing the shadow grow taller until it became a man, tall and sturdy, naked from the waste up.

“Did I hear someone outside?”

Morrigan closed the curtains with one hand and placed a finger on her lip with the other. “Mmmm.... it’s just the wind, I felt hot.”

Without another word the two locked in an embrace. Kira watched from the outside the outline of Morrigan and her new “lover” drop onto the bed. She started waiting, knowing that in a few moments Morrigan would emerge, leaving the poor man into a blithering idiot. Men are already blithering idiots, I’m just making it more obvious she would say. The moans got louder and Kira decided to step in the building for a refreshing nightly walk.

The cold breeze of the night was mixed with the artificial fans of the machinery, Kira heard the excitement of the city clearer than before. It took longer than usual, she noticed.

Kira looked at the height and decoration of the hotel, he certainly had taken Morrigan to a fancy place, much too expensive for a one night stand. That’s when she saw a strange figure lurking at the door.

Morrigan rested her head on the bed’s pillow. The man, nameless like all the rest, started tracing his tongue on her neck. His finger rubbed her neck along with his tongue. Morrigan couldn’t find ecstasy in that, she grew restless, and the temporary relief of a full bed offered no excitement anymore. It was almost as if someone was telling her to retire. Of course, after that passion filled night with Demitri she wondered if such an excitement would ever surge through her body again. There was something sensual about sleeping with their enemy, dangerous. Their little foreplay ended up in a battle that destroyed half the castle. Fortunately, it was his castle. But she made sure to leave him something he would always remember her by. She smiled at the thought, and realised that the man was no longer tracing her neck with his tongue, but with his teeth.

Kira struggled against the dark person’s grip. Foolish. She had dropped her guard for a second and this mysterious entity jumped on her. She struggled but his grip was too strong, and simply tightened with every squirm she made. Foolish. Kira saw his face as he pressed it near to hers. Fangs. He had fangs.

A vampire!

Instinctively she kicked his mid section giving her enough time to jump away.

“You’re slipping Morrigan.” He said “Master Demitri will reward me greatly for this.”

Good, he thought she was Morrigan. Kira can at least buy sometime before he realises the mistaken identity. Demitri sent this message for Morrigan, she had told Kira about him, in more details than Kira wished to knew. Using the skills the sucubus taught her, Kira concentrated energy on her palm and a black blade twisted itself out of her flesh. Kira winced, but quickly twirled and slashed the attacker’s face.

She stopped spinning and watched her opponent hold his face with blood seeping between his fingers. Kira dashed and kicked his stomach. Morrigan has many opponents, and Kira’s uncanny resemblance to her has gotten her into trouble in Makai more than once, that is why she was taught lessons in self defence.

Lesson 1: When your opponent is down, don’t let him get up.

Kira aimed her hand blade to his heart. The vampire disappeared, leaving Kira to hit the ground and smoke.

Lesson 2: Never think your opponent is defeated, until he’s dead. And even then be on your guards.

Her opponent re materialised from behind her. He imposed his open hand on her skull, picking her up. The blood from his face wound spilled to the ground.

“Feisty little girl, aren’t you?” He said to the struggling Kira. “It would be a shame if you had a small.... accident.”

He placed his other under her chin. “Of course, that is not what Master Demitri wanted, but let this be an admonishment, no one defies me, Rekots.”

Kira looked into his eyes with a new found determination, and she bit his hand. Rektos let go, leaving him exposed to her onslaught of punches and kicks to his ribs. He stumbled back, near the edge of the hotel. Kira kneeled, and sprang with a flying kick to his face. Rektos stumbled back and fell down, a loud crash echoed moments later.

Lesson 3: When an opponent stops to gloat, which he usually will, it’s time to finish him off.

She stepped to the edge of the building and saw her opponent. His face twisted into grimace and cats lurking over his deceased body. Kira shuddered, even though she’d seen it many times before, the scene never quite registered in her head. Not letting the scene distract her for too long, she rushed downstairs.

The bed had been ripped to shreds. Morrigan stepped back and got a clearer view of her opponent. She grinned seductively, and placed her hands together. The illumination blinded him, as it grew bigger and bigger until it finally engulfed his face.

He staggered around, his pale face now charred from the intense heat, and finally gave up and fell to the ground. Morrigan walked next to him, and sat on his stomach. She playfully ticked his chest with her fingers, letting him enjoy a brief moment of sweet dark rapture.

“Such a shame” Her lips whispered in his ears. “We were having such a nice night, and you had to do something as stupid as try to kill me...”

Apparently he did not find it amusing, he looked at her full of frustration in his eyes. “You would’ve done the same to me if you had to chance!”

Morrigan giggled, and slithered down until her whole body was directly on top of his. “True enough, you could have at least let us finish our little frolic. Vampires are known to be so strong, so fierce, so darkly sensual... I was quite disappointed. Should I wait for the next one who wants a night of ecstasy to compare notes?”

The vampire grunted. “Demitri sends you a message ‘with his love’. He says he enjoyed ‘that night’ and wishes to recreate it’s moments.”

“Hmmm... Demitri is getting bored too I see. Sending his middle men to do the job is so unlike him. Unless you trying to end my life was on your own initiative, you naughty naughty little child.”

He started to protest, but Morrigan placed her finger on his lips. She resumed her sitting position on his chest. “Shhhhhh.... can you hear it?”

Morrigan smiled when she saw his perplexed face. She followed the trail from his stomach to his hand with her own hand, and placed his cold hand carefully on her chest. “It’s my heartbeat....”

His eyes grew wider with fear, like a hunted animal that was caught by the hunter. Morrigan’s smile grew more seductive and twisted into a faint laugh. She placed her thick, full red lips on his own cold lifeless lips. He struggled, feeling a strange surge electrify his whole body. Morrigan drew in a long, steamy kiss. Literally, and the steam spewing from the vampire’s mouth was proof of it.

He attempted to scream, but was only drowned out by the sucubus’ tongue down his throat. He struggled more, and started kicking, trying to gasp for air and relief from the heat engulfing his insides. She started moaning before she finally let go of her victim.

Kira bursted into the room, hoping she wasn’t too late to warn Morrigan. Though as soon as she stood straight she was greeted by the sucubus herself.

“Morri- Morri” Kira gasped for air. “Vampires...coming too...”

“Shhhhh.... I already know. And they have been.....taken care of.”

The mistress of lights came from the horizons and chased her rival, the dark. The starlets of buildings disappeared as men’s fear of the mysterious mistress was chased away by the routine of the sun. The bride of the night and her companion followed the darkness until they disappeared with it completely.

Inside the hotel room lay a shrivelled up and badly burned corpse. His pale skin clashed with the ashes sprinkled all over his body, his face barely recognisable except for a few features. One of the features, undeniable to any observer, was the formation of his lips- a deep, satisfied smile.
