Juni Chapter 5

"Springtime Miss Avelle"

On a bridge overlooking the large vast city, two lovers were watching the sunrise.  But what could have been beautiful canvas of yellow, orange, and red painted across the sky was clouded by a foggy black stain.

"Do you see it, Terrace?"  The long brown haired lady pointed to the sky.  "Or, I guess it would be more like you don't see it."

She sighed as her boyfriend continued staring at the morning sky.

"It's odd, to feel so attached to a city like this, where one must never travel alone at night and the outset of everything is so dark."  The girl continued on.

"It's that bad, huh?"  Terrace replied, continuing to gaze at the sky.

She rejoined him in his watch.  "Those are the great factories of New York.  Kings of industrial production.  They are, in fact, an evil necescity of the city, I suppose.  Sometimes, I wish I came from an exotic land or a beautiful country, but that was my real home."

She turned away and closed her eyes.

"Sometimes people told me to just move, or watch the sky at a cleaner part of the city.  But... just once, Terrace, I would have liked to see a sky... no, to just see a sunrise, over my home area that wasn't tainted with the thick line of dark smog that was just one of the many things cities have become so infamous for."

Now ordinarily, someone who stated the reply given would be thought of as insane.  But for some reason, when Terrace replied,  there was just a certain charm he had which couldn't be identified.

Terrace snapped his fingers and gave the girl a smile.  "Leave it to me, Celine.  By tomorrow morning, there'll be a sunrise over New York more beautiful than anything you've ever seen."

"I miss them."  Juni stared at the empty glass of wine on the counter of the bar.

On the stage, a band of musicians were playing ballroom music, and several people conversed around clothed tables.  The well-dressed bartender came and picked up the glass, waited for Juni's nod, refilled it, then walked away.

"Sir Bison, and Juli, and heck, even Dr. Yamoto."  Juni continued to reminisce.  "And I miss being able to wear my Shadaloo symbol in public."

"You shouldn't complain so much."  Avelle remarked.  "If you only knew the truth about Sir Bison, I'm sure you wouldn't mind being away from him nearly as much as you do, now."

"I... can't believe that."  Juli slowly responded, turning away.

"I was once as naive as you were."  Avelle commented without looking at Juni.  "Everything I ever did was in the name of Lord Bison.  The only one I lived for was him.  I gave my life to him and I thought I would never have any regrets."

The ex-agent sighed and looked at her makeshift apprentice.

"Strange how to this day, I'm not sure if I ever did get any.  Regrets, that is."

"Sir Bison cares about us."  The blonde stated to counteract Avelle's invisible argument.

"Sir Bison cares about Agent Cammy.  And no one else.  Look how she's always with him these days.  How she surpasses the rest of us in every way no matter how hard we try.  And the rumours about the two?  They're actually quite plausible, but we're generally too blind to believe it.  The rest of us?  We are... well,"  Avelle waved to two men at a table.  "Rob!  Fokken!"

The two were by Avelle in a second.

Rob grinned.  "Hey there.  What can I do for you?"

Fokken, a man who wore a red expensive suit with several gold linings. bowed to the two girls.  "Fokken at your service, m'lady.  Charmed, even."

"I believe that it's time for us to leave the hotel ballroom finally."  Avelle stated.  "Who will be a dear and take care of the bill?"

Rob clumsily fiddled through his wallet for a moment before noticing that it was notoriously empty.

Fokken opened up his own wallet and took some money out of it.  "Allow me, m'lady.  Anything to be of service, even."

Having proven her point, Avelle gave Juni a quick glance.

"Hmm."  The bigger man shrugged.  "Looks like it's time for me to pawn some money off my partner again.  Well, later then."

Rob saluted to Avelle, then proceeded to leave.  Terrace walked past him and the two waved to each other for a brief moment, before Terrace reached Avelle.  "Hey there."

"Huh?  Terrace, who's this?" Celine asked, glancing at Avelle.

"Oh, it's Terrace again."  Avelle nonchalantly commented.

Terrace smiled.  "Could I  ask you a favor?"

The red-haired female hunter frowned.  "Again?"

Juni glanced at the man.  "I think I'm beginning to see why Avelle would find you so frustrating to deal with, Terrace."

"Me?  Ah, Juni, did Avelle tell you that?  Well, I'm only human, you know."

Celine blinked.  "Avelle?  Juni?  Huh?"

"I guess..."  Juni muttered.

"I hope I'm not annoying you that much."  Terrace remarked.  "How do you like trying this out, anyway?  You seem to be enjoying yourself."

"Yea.  But I'm still dissappointed."  The aspiring temporary huntress commented.  "I thought we'd do some real hunter stuff, but so far I have yet to meet a real ghost, demon, or vampire.  What's this about some lord of the night in Latveria?  Maybe we could try that, sometime."

"Whoa, hold it there, tiger."  Terrace quickly interrupted.  "That's way out of our league."

"Too bad."  Juni sighed.  "Lots of other hunters got to go there.  In fact, I heard they were having quite the party."

"Course, lots of other hunters are also suicidal idiots."  Avelle muttered.  "They generally managed to be in the business for such a long time only by pure luck."

The man put his hand to his chin.  "If you really wanted to go back to Shadaloo already, I don't see what is stopping you.  It's not like you're in trouble with them or anything yet since your break period isn't over yet.  Though, call me a moral idiot, if you will, but I'm not sure how you can tolerate working for such an evil organization."

"Hey!"  Juni snapped.  "Shadaloo isn't evil!  Unless you believe that when enough people believe a LIE, it becomes the truth."

Avelle didn't seem very happy with Terrace's comment, either.  "We still work for Shadaloo, too, Terrace.  Even if indirectly."

"Heh, true."  Terrace smiled.  "But it's for a good cause.  We're trying to rid the world of other evil things like evil vampires, evil spirits, and evil demons."

"Yea, but only because those evil things are working against an 'evil' organization."  Avelle added, saying 'evil organization' with a little sarcasm in her tone.

"Hmm..."  The man had his hand to his chin again.  "Now the question is, is serving evil to get rid of evil evil?"

Juni blinked, then paused before thinking of a response.  The most she could do was comment on the question.  "That's just evil."

Terrace laughed.  "Sorry about that.  But it's a good question, I think."

Avelle sighed.  "So, what is it this time?"

"Well, I imagine since you have access to one of the most extensive collections of the greatest hunters of all time, you'd have something that could help."  Terrace commented rather anxiously, before popping the question.  "Do you have anything that you think could clear the smog from the skies over the industrial side of New York, if only for a little while?"

Avelle glared at the playboy.  "That's... one of the stupidest requests I've ever heard."

"Hey, if it'll make Celine here happy, then I'm willing to try."  The optimism in Terrace's face continued to be unwavering.

Avelle's glare at Terrace sharpened.  "Why do you always have to be too damn charitable?  Are you that idiotic?"

"Idiotic like a fox!"  Terrace snidely replied.

Juni snickered again.  I remember how Juli would talk to me like that.

"And who is Celine, anyway?"  Avelle asked, glancing at the girl by Terrace's side.  "What ever happened to Alana?"

Celine blinked again.   "Alana?  Who?"

"What are you trying to imply?"  Terrace looked shocked at Avelle's implied accusation, then directed his own glance at Fokken.  "Hey, what about your Lord Bison?  Who's this guy?!"

"Wha?  Fokken?  He's just..."  Avelle stared at her rich companion, who gave her another bow.  "Well, that is to say, I'm just keeping my options open.  Oh what the hell, I'll help you out."

"Yes!"  Terrace cheered.  "I wouldn't expect anything less from a girl as great as the great Avelle."

Poor Celine was starting to get really confused.  "Avelle?  Juni?  Alana?  Who are these people?!"

"Ah, they're just good friends of mine."  Terrace stated, not getting the true meaning of Celine's question.

"Don't worry about him."  Juni playfully whispered to Celine.  "Knowing him, even if things don't work out, you'll at least end up ahead.  Avelle taught me to feel free to take advantage of a relationship if you can.  I'm still trying to get the hang of it, myself."

"Yea, maybe."  Celine commented, though she wasn't happier at all.  "But is it worth it for a broken heart?"

"Not sure about that."  Juni responded.  "I guess I'd probably have to experience it myself in order to find out."

"Anyway," Avelle cut in.  "Terrace, go reserve a spot at the statue of liberty.  I have some powerful wind charms picked up from various hunts and rewards which would probably work, but we'll need a pretty high vantage point to pull this off."

"M'lady, if I may speak.  Suggest, even, if you will."  After being silent for such a long time, Fokken finally broke his silence.  "It won't help to clear the skies only for them to become dark once again in an instant.  I do believe I have a nice solution."

"Oh?  Meet me outside the hotel, and we'll take care of it."  Avelle responded.  "And dammit, all this pollution in this stupid city will probably cause us all to develop lung cancer if we stick around any longer, so let's hurry and get this over with."

Fokken and Terrace nodded to Avelle before leaving, with Celine following them.  The hunter leader took this oppurtunity to have a few more private words with the new recruit.  "So, are you coming?"

"I'm not sure about this..."  Juni muttered.  "Maybe I should just go back to Shadaloo now.  I mean, yea, this is really fun and all, but then again, I'm sure Juli dissapproves and then there's the fact that I'm pretty sure Shadaloo isn't exactly very happy with this whole independent hunter concept too, and..."

Avelle quickly interrupted.  "You sound exactly like that damn microphone girl."

"The fluffy pink-haired girl?  You mean Agent Serina?!"  Juni blinked in shock.  "But... but everyone hates her!"

"Now do you see what I'm talking about?"  Avelle replied a lot more seriously, this time.  "Juni, tell you what.  Why don't we try this first, then you can decide on whether or not you want to go back to Shadaloo.  Your break lasts a little longer, right?  Unless Lord Bison calls you in on an emergency, you probably won't get into any trouble."

Juni thought over the issue for a while, then nodded.  It was, in fact, really fortunate that Avelle's personal Shadaloo jet plane travelled hella fast, to say the least, so it probably wouldn't hurt to try out the hunter life for just a little longer.

Fokken gave Avelle yet another bow.  "If we could just get a warrant from the local law enforcement.  A simple cease and desist order, if you will.  Our meeting with the current sergeant is appointed to take place here."

"This will be easy enough."  Avelle stared at the run-down building and sarcastically commented about Terrace's lofty aspirations.  "Completely screwing over New York's industrial economy for a day just to get a decent sunrise for an hour seems like a fair enough trade-off to me."

She entered the building with Fokken following while Juni waited outside.  In the room, there were several thug-like men leaning against the walls dressed in various assortments of leather jackets, mohawks, and jeans, but Avelle didn't pay any attention to them.  A large extremely husky and rather fat police officer with a lot of facial hair was sitting at the desk in the middle of the run-down room, helping himself to some donuts with bubble-gum flavored topping.  To be fair, a good portion of his bulk was muscle, but another good portion of it was... well, fat.

"Hey there, baby."  The cop sat back and grinned, before smoking a cigar.  "I heard you needed some help from New York's finest.  Let me tell you that it doesn't get much finer than the man, Sergeant Edi. E, here."

At that brief moment, Avelle had a horrible vission of a ludicrously obese man playing some bagpipes before rubbing his overly large bosoms and proclaiming, "I'm DEEEAD SEXY!!!"

The poor gal shuddered at the thought.

Edi. E wasn't that horrendous of a sight, but apparently Avelle would actually have to use orthodox methods, this time around. Despite the myriad of male admirers, she did value her dignity, after all.  "We need..."

"A temporary cease-and-desist order on every factory in this designated area in New York?"  The police officer broke in.  "It's already taken care of.  Thank your companion over there."

"Really?  Hmm... that's... a pleasant surprise, I guess."  Avelle's glance followed Edi. E's cigar motion to Fokken.  She slowly frowned.  "I suppose we'd better get going then."

As soon as Avelle turned around, one of the men wearing an open shirt, blue jeans, a red tie, and a blue hat over his eyes, stepped in front of her.

"Hold it.  Playtime's over, lady."  The man patted his baseball bat against his other hand's palm.  "Don't think we don't know who you are.  I was getting tired of these stupid games and now we can finally get some real action."

"I am so sorry, m'lady."  Fokken stated. "But as a hunter who was also working for Shadaloo, there was no way I could turn down the job.  An S rated job, even.  The type that only the one you're trying to impersonate was supposed to be allowed to recieve."

Surprised for less than a second, a smile slowly crossed Avelle's face.  She didn't notice Fokken's apology, but it didn't matter since she really wasn't that angry at the betrayal, anyway.  "You don't think I'm real?"

"The real Avelle is dead."  Fokken replied.  "No one can escape Shadaloo once they are blacklisted.  It's too bad, she was a wonderful lady.  You remind me of her very much, but I can spot falsehood from reality.  Not that it matters.  We have our orders to track down the girl in that Avelle hunting group, and you can not keep us from fulfilling our mission."

The rest of the thugs prepared to strike.

"I can't?"  Avelle replied, keeping her calm.  "You underestimate me with your faulty beliefs that I'm not real.  But if you're after Juni, it's important to know that I did learn one thing from her."

Avelle quickly grabbed Fokken and placed him in front of her, making him the recipient of several painful baseball blows, punches, kicks, and thwacks with a chain.  She then quickly vaulted over him right before Edi. E could smack her in the back with his nightstick, and landed in the doorway.

"Later, boys."  She blew a kiss to the tangled mass before leaving the building.

Juni met her a short distance from the building.  "Avelle, what's..."

"Don't worry about it."  Avelle interrupted before Juni could complete her sentence.  "Go meet Terrace at the statue and help him finish the latest in his stupid quest to either revive chivalry, please a girl, or get laid.  I have some things I need to attend to, here."

"Avelle, are those guys..."

"Get going!"  Avelle snapped.  "I'll take care of it."

"Okay..."  Juni quickly dashed off, then gave one last glance back and noticed that Avelle wasn't there anymore.  The girl paused and continued to stare at the empty void for a moment longer.  "Going up against so many people by herself and she didn't look afraid at all.  I wish I were like that..."

On an island where the large vast city was in the distance, two lovers were watching the tall beautiful monument of Lady Liberty with the backdrop of a starlit sky behind it.

"Do you see it, Terrace?"  The long-brown haired lady pointed to the monument.  "The Statue of Liberty, the symbol of freedom and liberty... isn't it strange how a symbol of refuge and..."

"Hi."  Juni interrupted the two.  "I have Avelle's wind thingies.  I'm sure she won't mind if I do this."

Terrace had a worried look on his face and didn't notice his current girlfriend was a tad annoyed.  "Is something wrong?"

"Yea..."  Juni responded.  "About the police thing... well,"

"It went fine.  The factories of New York have stopped for now."

Juni quickly turned around and noticed Fokken behind her.  Terrace simply stared at him wide-eyed with surprise at the beat-up rich boy.  "Holy crap, Fokken, what happened to you?"

"I tripped on the way here, landed in a garbage can, dump truck came, ended up falling onto the pavement..."  Fokker rambled on.  "It was a vicious cycle.  Extremely painful, even.  But I dare say, we should finish this now if we hope to be done by sunrise.  The factories will only be closed down for a day, you know."

"Bingo!"  Terrace snapped his fingers.  "Well, let's get going, then."

Juni raised an eyebrow at Fokken as they entered the elevator and prepared to ascend the statue to the large 'torch' it was holding.  "Did those guys..."

"Perhaps."  The man slowly turned to meet Juni's glance, showing only confusion in his face.  "The tripping thing wasn't very far off, but you probably know that."

"....."  Juni didn't really responded.  She looked towards the floor for a brief moment, before looking up again.  "Wow, we're getting really really high, here..."

"The view is great, isn't it?"  Terrace commented as he stared at the many lights of the mainland below among the dark starlit sky.  "How often do you get to see things like this at Shadaloo?"

"Usually I'm too busy trying to avoid getting shot to notice things like this while working for Shadowlaw..."  Juni muttered.

The elevator stopped and the four got off to wonder around the torch area.  Celine quickly dragged Terrace to the other end of the circular room to look out the window over there instead of where Juni and Fokken were.

"I'm here to warn you."  Fokken whispered.  "Please return back to Shadaloo.  A hit squad was assembled and they're serious, and resistance can only lead to pain for you.  Perhaps death, even."

"A hit squad?  After me?  But... why?"  Juni paused for a moment to think as Fokken stared at her, a large hint of confusion on his face.  "Avelle didn't seem like she would have any trouble with them."

"I'm sorry, m'lady, but you are not Avelle."  Fokken continued.  "I don't understand you.  You obviously plan on going back later, eventually.  Why do you risk yourself like this?"

Juni stared at the sky, then at the city below once again.  "I want to enjoy this for as long as possible."

Fokken joined her in watching the view.  He contemplated it for a second before looking at Juni again.  "I can see your point.  A strange life we hunters lead.  Crazy, even."

"Don't lie to me."  Juni looked at him in the eye.  "Did Sir Bison order this?  I don't think that he would do such a thing, but if I know that he wants me back now, then I'll come back.  Otherwise, all the random hitmen in the world won't convince me to return until my free time period is up."

The man didn't answer for quite a long time.  Most likely pondering whether to lie or not.  He decided to tell the truth in the end, despite knowing the consequences.  "No.  The high commander and leader of Shadaloo didn't personally order us to go after you."

"Hey Juni!"  Terrace yelled from the other end of the circular room.  "We should get this over with finally!"

"Right!"  Juni yelled back.

"I too can not break my contract."  Fokken stated as Juni rummaged through her pack for some of Avelle's supernatural wind charms.  "I'll tell you one more thing which might help, though you probably already know.  Don't expect help from New York's finest.  The head sergeant is rumoured to have recieved his position by working in league with a now defunct gang and he's already been heavily bribed to keep the rest of the police out of this."

"Thanks, I'll remember that."  Juni answered as she put a circular medal down in one corner.  She handed another to Fokken.  "Over there.  Let's just finish this then, at least."

The four medals were quickly placed around the circle as stupid overly sensitive parents who couldn't parent worth a damn complained that something called the Dark Fighter RPG endorsed devil worshipping.  Despite the fact that there was nothing to link a later killing spree undergone by a bunch of three year olds to the incident, they took it upon themselves to put the responsibility on the Dark Fighters RPG and sued the pants off of its caretaker, Budah.  When all four medals were placed, a bunch of glowing lines appeared and connected them together, forming a pentagon!  The ultimate symbol of evil.

(Well, actually, it was just a square.  Damn censors.  That and pentagons have five points, not four)

Celine looked outside for one last time.  "Well, I guess that's it then.  Now we can only h..."

A large blast of wind sent Juni and Fokken slamming into Terrace and Celine.  The four quickly ducked down against the lower wall to prevent themselves from flying out the window.

"Okay, okay!"  Juni yelled, though it was hard to hear her above the roaring wind.  "So Avelle never told me how powerful these things were!  I'm sorry!"

On a bridge overlooking the large vast city, two lovers were watching the sunrise.  A beautiful canvas of yellow, orange, and red was painted across the sky.

"It's... wonderful!"  Celine cried, with some tears forming in her eyes.

"Heh, yea."  Terrace replied, continuing to look at the sky.  Terrace glanced over at Juni.  "So, what do you think?"

There was only a little more time left until Juni would have to really go back to Shadaloo, and in the end she didn't mind since she did miss her partner, her commander, and even that kooky doctor, but that wouldn't stop her from enjoying every possible moment of this new life until then.

The blonde agent returned a smile to Terrace, then looked back up at the sky.  "It's more beautiful than anything I've ever seen."
